Proper tools can improve the quality of life and even life expectancy considerably. In general, our target audience consists of all user groups for whom advanced eye tracking would provide a better interaction method. (2009), a new group of disabled users are emerging who are ‘choosing to use eye control either to augment or replace their existing method, often because they feel it is a more comfortable, quicker and/or easier way of controlling technology’. In addition, the technology and interaction methods developed can improve the quality and speed of communication for users with lesser impairments, and eventually for all users. Once thought rare, this impairment is, in fact, quite common: there are nearly 120,000 cases diagnosed worldwide each year. This technology is crucial to users suffering from various types of motor neuron disease (MND), such as ALS or locked-in syndrome. Eye tracking makes it possible for people who are otherwise totally paralysed to use eye movements and gaze direction as a means to communicate with the outside world. This book focuses on communication and control tools based on eye gaze tracking.
